SKIPSHELLEREN
This is one of the most well known Stone Age dwellings in Norway.
In the cave where it never rains, where no plants grow and where the sand is black as ashes, the people of the Stone Age lived over 7,000 years ago. The area offered aboundant access to game and fresh and salt-water fish. Excavations of the cave have helped establish the various time epochs and how the people of the Stone Age lived. This prehistoric place can be visited with or without a guide.

A well-equipped museum which gives a good impression of teaching in the "olden days".

KALDESTADSTOVA
Displays parts of the Dyvik collection, a private collection of objects ranging from weapons to national costume, jewellery and textiles. Kaldestadstova is situated next to the school museum.

SALMON TRAPS
Along RV.569 you will notice small "houses" which ar situated along the fjord either on stilts or fastended to the mountainsides.
These "houses" are salmon traps where the fishermen would sit for hours waiting for the big catch.
This exeptional 100-year-old fishing tradition is unique to the Osterfjord area.

THE HESJEDAL WATERFALL
With a free fall of some 70 metres the Hesjedal waterfall is an impressive sight.
The watersystem of Hesjedal is the only one in the municipality of Vaksdal to remain untapped.
Nice Picnic area by the waterfall.

THE POET OLAV NYGARD
The famous Norwegian lyric Olav Nygard was born on the mountain farm Krossen in Modalen. He only left four small poem collections, yet Olav Nygard is regarded as one of the most important Norwegian lyrics. At Mo a memorial to Olav Nygard made by Ståle Kyllingstad is erected.

MODALEN SKULEMUSEUM
The school was built in 1888 and was used until the 1960s. The school building remains the way it was during this period, but a number of objects from the school in Mostraumen are on display in the school.

THE LONGEST SALMON LADDER IN NORWAY
In the 34 meter high Hellandsfossen waterfall, BKK has built a salmon ladder in connection with the hydro-electric development.
This might be one of the most peculiar man made constructions in a Norwegian waterfall!

OSTERØY MUSEUM AT GJERSTAD
Osterøy Museum shows a cross-section of the traditional Osterøy community, where buildings and fruniture speak of ways of life and handicraft througout the ages.

HAVRÅTUNET
Feel the atmosphere of the old days! These ar some of the best preserved farmyards in the west of Norway - a hamlet in the steep hills at the south side of Osterøy, between the Osterøy bridge and the village of Bruvik. The area is rich in cultural heritage; old building traditions and farming methods are kept alive, even the strip farming.
The hamlet is privately owned, so please respect the limited admission.

HAMRE CHURCH (Osterøy)
The beautiful church of Hamre dating back to the 1620s is located on the western tip of Osterøy. The church has a rather unusual location in the landscape as it is built to be visible from the sea, which then was the only entry to the area. Once it was a centre where to people cam rowing from all directions to worship. The church, which has the Bible texts and pictures on the walls, has an unique architecture with its proud pitch and rich furniture with beautiful carvings, as well as a font made from steatite dating back to 1250. Hamre church is one of the few wooden churches remaining in Norway from this periode, and is an unique example of the traditional West Norwegian church.

OLE BULL HUSET
Visit the area where the world famous violin maestro Ole Bull (1810- 1880) spent most of his childhood.
In 1864 Ole Bull began to build the villa which today is a living monument to him and the music which fascinated the entire world. The Ole Bull villa is the first attempt in Norway at copying the old Nordic style, it is also characterised by at strong influence from the Swiss style. This unique villa has many details inspired by the Norse, the Viking as well as the Romantic styles. The roof trusses are decorated with delicate carvings on the inside. On the outside you will find ornaments of ancient dragon motives together with many details from Urnes Stave Church.
The Ole Bull farm has been in the family for approx. 300 years and is today owned by Ole’s great-grand son Knut Henriksen.

HERLANDSNESJANE - marshland
After the Storavatnet lake, if you drive Fv.368 between Lonevåg and Fotlandsvåg, you come across the unique marshland calle Herlandnesjane. This area is protected as a natural and biological reservation under the European Nature Preservation Convention. It consists of a mosaic of different types of marshland, and it is typical of the western part of Norway. The area has a rich bird and insect population.

KOSSDALSVEGEN
A road of cultural and historical interest, built in 1890 and now restored. With 17 hairpin bends and a 27% gradient, the road is a scenic experience in its own right, ideal for riding, cycling or walking.
The best views are to be had by starting at the top of the Kossdalen valley and following the road down to Hosanger village. The walk up the hill from Hosanger takes about an hour at normal pace. You can also start the walk from Svenheim.
