SUGGESTED ITINERARIES |
Teigdalen and Eksingedalen - the most beautiful valleys in western Norway
From Voss, cycle along Vangsvatnet lake to Bulken. From there, the trip continues to the small town of Evanger, where you turn off towards Eksingedalen. The journey through Teigdalen and up Nesheimsfjellet climbs to 720 metres above sea level, offering fantastic views. On the other side of the mountains, the road winds its way down through Eksingedalen, with its many waterfalls, until valley and fjord converge at Eidslandet. There are several places to spend the night in Eksingedalen (see separate listing), and if you bring your fishing rod, the trip is guaranteed to be a success.
Cycling from Eidslandet to Dale, you get excellent views of the fjord and can admire old road-building techniques. Sights en route include Hesjedalsfossen waterfall with its impressive 70-metre free fall. Cycle to the industrial town of Dale and then on to Stanghelle, where you can catch the train to Bergen.
The old main road between Voss and Dale
Start out from Voss along Vangsvatnet lake to Bulken. At Bulken, follow the signs to Hamlagrø. Once you get up into the mountains, you'll pass one farm after another as you make your way down Bergsdalen, and you might like to include an overnight stay at Lid, where you can enjoy some genuine farm hospitality (see separate listing). The dam at Storfossen marks the start of the descent to Dale, where you can visit the Dale of Norway factory shop or take a guided tour 400 metres inside the mountain at the power station. From Dale you can catch the train to Bergen.
Fjord cycling on Osterøy
After travelling by train from Bergen to Arna, you can cycle via Garnes to the Osterøy bridge. Continue on your bike up the old road, lined with guard stones, to the fjordside villages, or inland to the island's beautiful agricultural countryside and mountains. Osterøy has many cultural gems that are worth a visit, such as Havråtunet, Bruvik Vognfabrikk (carriage works), Ole Bull's house, Hamre church and Osterøy Museum. Don't forget your walking boots and fishing rod!
Modalen - the small district that's big on scenery
You can reach Modalen via Romarheim or Dale. Mo is a great starting point for cycling trips up the valley, and you can cycle up the main road to Stølsvatnet, gateway to Stølsheimen. From there, access roads serving a hydro-electric scheme continue for many miles into the mountains. If you prefer a shorter trip, you can cycle along the old pack-road. At Mo village you can hire a boat and try your luck fishing on the fjord.
