Top level English Suggested Trips Walking

The Stølsheimen mountains take their name from the Norwegian word støl, meaning shieling (mountain pasture).
Large parts of the Stølsheimen range are a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, where you can walk amid unspoilt nature and scenery. Stølsheimen is one of the most famous mountain ranges in western Norway and a popular destination for walkers.

Signposted trails link the mountain lodges run by Bergen Turlag, where you can stay overnight, or you can simply enjoy a day out. You can start in Eksingedalen or Modalen and walk all the way to the Sognefjord or the Vikafjellet mountains.

Picturesque green valleys, or bare mountain peaks commanding views over half of western Norway – the choice is yours. For maps and information contact Bergen Turlag, tel +47 55 32 22 30.

From Farestveit in Modalen to Flatekval in Eksingedalen

This is a much-frequented mountain track linking the villages in Modalen and Eksingedalen. It used to be the route taken by local folk when they met to do business or celebrate. The track is signposted, and it takes about three hours to walk across the mountains. Walking boots recommended.

Otterstadstølen

The jewel of Modalen and an ideal spot for enjoying the great outdoors. The shieling here remained in operation right up until the 1960s. The most westerly wild pine forest in northern Europe is near by. The farm road starts at Grønhaug outside Mo village. The track is signposted, and the walk takes about 45 minutes. Walking boots recommended.

Seljestigen Fjellturar

If you love panoramic views, head for the Seljestigen track from Straume in Modalen to Vardalsbu lodge in the Stølsheimen mountains. From here, your gaze reaches from sea to glacier, from the coast of southern Hordaland to the Jotunheimen mountains and the heart of fjord country. You should allow a full day for the walk, whether on your own or accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide. The walk starts at Straume, where you can also rent a cottage.

As well as Seljestigen, your guide can offer guided walks of varying distance and difficulty throughout much of the Stølsheimen range (day trips and overnight stays).

For bookings, prices and more information, please contact John Sigurd Nygard, 5729 Modalen, tel +47 56 59 98 37.
