Top level English Suggested Trips Motoring

On this excursion you will experience a cross-section of West Norwegian nature and culture. The journey will take you from the fjord through luxuriant valleys with small communities and almost all the way up to Stølsheimen.
The area has long traditions of waterpower production and the excursion gives an insight into the modern energy and textile and ready -made clothing industries.

  • Follow E39 northward from Bergen across the Nordhordland Bridge and along Osterfjord to Romarheim.
  • Turn off to the left on to Rv.569 towards Modalen.
On the way to Mo you will pass Mostraumen and the mountain formation “Slottet” - the castle. In Mo you will find a well-arranged sandy beach perfect for children. Otterstad pier, a nice recreation area with outdoor grill and playground, is only a few minutes walk from the centre. 5 minutes walk outside Mo you will find “I.L Oase”, a very special meetingplace. Here you can buy local caftwork and clothing, coffee and homemade “waffles” and freshly baked bread.

From Mo centre it is a very nice drive up the valley to Bjørnhaugen farm. Here they keep goats, donkeys, hens, cats and dogs. In the summer you can watch the making (cooking) of home-made goatcheese at the farm.

From Modalen the excursion continues through the 4-km long tunnel to Eksingedalen.

Through Eksingedalen to Straume

Turn right down the valley to Eidslandet. It took 101 years to build the tortuous road through the luxuriant nature of Eksingedalen. At Eidslandet you can see the old road which runs between tunnels made by hand. Notice the small “houses” on stilts along the fjord. These small houses are old salmon traps where fishermen would sit for days waiting for the big salmon catch.

The Hesjedal waterfall, on the left-hand side of the road, is quite an impressive sight with its free fall of 70 meters, plunging down the mountainside and under the road.

The village of Stamnes is situated at the entrance to Bolstadstraumen. Stamnes was the land og the ship owners. Black when the sand industry was the major trade on Osterfjorden, there was a ship owner in “every house”.

The drive continues along the idyllic Bolstadstraumen towards Straume and the Open Air Museum with the well-equipped School Museum, Kaldestadstova with its old collections, a protected boathouse area, salmon traps and in particular the Stone Age dwelling place Skipshelleren from 6000 BC.

Continue towards E16 and Dale and visit the HydroElectric Power Centre or the factory shop of Dale of Norway AS.

The valley of Eksingedalen and Teigdalen

Turn left at the end of the tunnel from Modalen and you are in the valley of Eksingedalen. Eksingedalen is a luxuriant agricultural valley with the road winding upward parallel to the river Ekso. Farming in this area is predominantly goat and sheep farming, and at the top of the valley at GullbrÃ¥ you can buy goat’s-milk cheese.

Nesheimfjellet links Eksingedalen with Teigdalen, which is famous for its traditionally smoked, cured meat. After the drive over the mountain with view and photographing stops on Fv. 313, a visit to Evanger Pølsefabrikk, to taste and buy the sausages and other product made at the factory, is recommended. The sausage factory produces the famous Vossakorven and many variants of traditional Norwegian cured meat.
